Course Overview - Why Take This Course?

This Abrasive Wheels training course will help employees to identify the hazards and risks of using abrasive wheels (angle grinders, bench grinders, chop saw) any equipment that has a requirement to use an abrasive cutting wheel.

The information provided will give delegates the knowledge on the precautions that must be taken when operating abrasive wheel equipment, in accordance with Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

The aims of this Abrasive Wheels training course is to train employees on the users’ skills and knowledge and to achieve a level of competency on the safe use of their abrasive wheels.

By the end of the training course, delegates will have learned the skills necessary to use their equipment safely in accordance with their company rams and the latest HSE guidance (HSG17).

Course Aims & Objectives

  • Introduce a safe system of work as per HSG17 guidance.
  • Demonstrate to the delegate the correct procedures for using the equipment in a way that will not put the delegate at risk of injury.
  • Give the delegate the knowledge to be able to select the correct wheel for the job.
  • Provide suitable personal protective equipment as required.

  • Introduction – HSE guidance, employer, and employee responsibilities
  • Grinding safety – pre-use safety checks.
  • Accidents and reasons for injuries caused by abrasive wheels.
  • Abrasive wheel legislation and legal requirements for anyone operating this abrasives in the workplace.
  • Understanding the dangers and risks arising from the use of abrasive wheels including harmful dusts, vibration, and noise.
  • Precautions against hazards – how to carry out a risk assessment to identify risks to employees and others.
  • How to identify the different types of abrasive wheels and their equipment such as bench/pedestal grinders, disc cutters, and angle grinders, chop saw.
  • How to select the appropriate abrasive wheel type for the job.
  • Handling, storage, and transportation of abrasive wheels.
  • Abrasive wheel components including flanges, blotters, bushes, nuts.
  • Methods of marking abrasive wheels with their type, size, and maximum operating speed.
  • How to inspect and ring test abrasive wheels for damage.
  • Wheel mounting – how to safely install abrasive wheels.
  • The proper method of truing and dressing an abrasive wheel.
  • The correct adjustment of work rests and mechanical guards on pedestal or bench grinding machines.
  • The use of suitable personal protective equipment when operating abrasive wheels.
  • Safe working practice – precautions you can take to prevent accidents in the use of abrasive wheels.
  • Practical participation on the use of abrasive with course delegates.

Training Requirements

Operatives will be required to participate in the full use of their abrasive wheels under supervision as per HSG17 and the provision and use of work equipment regulations. (PUWER).

The training environment must be safe as per the Health and Safety at work Act 1974.

Full personal protective equipment must be used as per personal protective equipment regulations.

Certification

This course is accredited through the CPD standards office under the heading ‘Safe Use of Power Tools’. Delegates successfully completing this training course will receive a certificate on the safe use of abrasive wheels which can be used as evidence of Continuous Professional Development.

We can provide this training nationwide at a location of your choice to suit.

If you cannot travel to one of our training centre locations then we can come to your premises to provide training on-site as long as your workplace is suitable.
